Fifteen animals and they are all named “Bob”?

Title: Fifteen Animals
Author/Illustrator: Sandra Boynton
: Board book
Age: 0 – 3 years

Summary and Review:

A boy has fifteen pets.  Fourteen of them are named “Bob”.  The turtle?  Well, he has a different name, and you are just going to have to read the book to find out.  I love this book–I love the way it sounds and rolls off his tongue.  This was one of the first ones my toddler could “read” by turning the pages and remembering the lines.  Cute, of course, too, as are all Sandra Boynton books.

Possible conversations to have with your kids:

This is a great counting book.  Ever more so because it’s not written as a traditional counting book, and counting is not in the actual text.  But the title clues you in, and each animal is labeled with a large number, and kids can count as you read the book.  Or after you read the book you can go back and count the animals and see the large, friendly numbers so kids can get used to what each number looks like.

I think my favorite conversation-starter from this book would be to talk about names your son has for his stuffed animals.  “The boy in this book named his rabbit, Bob.  Do you have a name for your rabbit?”  Etc.  I find my son reluctant to name his stuffed animals, but at times it seems like he really wants to.  This could help someone get started.  Of course, you risk everyone being given the name Bob, but there you go.  No plan is perfect.
